A new beginning

September is right around the corner and your child is going to a new kindergarten, class or grade…

  1. A NEW BEGINNING – Explain to your child this is the last week of the holiday, and ask if there is still anything she wishes to do. Maybe we could plan something together, as a family, to celebrate the end of the holiday? Start counting backwards… and every day, say how many days are left until the new beginning.

  2. CONTROL - New beginnings can be scary... Empower your child by giving her all the information you can: What is the new place like, go and visit, what’s the teacher’s name, whom will be the classmates, try to meet them… Encourage your child to choose, and organize, her new bag and equipment.

  3. TRUST - Tell your child how much you trust her, and truly believe in her strength and competence. But also, show the teacher, how much you trust her. Never speak badly about the staff in front of your child!

  4. GROWTH - In the first few weeks your child might need a lot of attention, encouragement, and time to rest, so be sensitive and available to her! Remember to be joyful and optimistic, as the times we grow most, are in those experiences, when we actually get out of our comfort zone, and challenge ourselves!!

Remember that children adapt extremely easily, and most of them will fit in the new environment, just like they have always been there!!!!

For some it might take a little longer, so don’t forget to breathe, be patient and confident about your child’s ability to go through change.

And if you feel you are still struggling, give me a call.
